Alan Toulson (Weymouth 1955 1960)

Dear Old Millhillian,

We are saddened to advise the Old Millhillian community that Alan Toulson passed away peacefully on Friday 16th November 2022 with his family beside him.

Alan leaves a legacy of incredible service to Mill Hill School and to all Old Millhillians. In response to a request from Dame Angela Rumbold, the then Court Chairperson, together with OM Paul Nicholas his co-partner at Reynolds Porter Chamberlain, he authored the Articles of Association that underpinned the governance of the School when it was formed as a charitable company limited by guarantee – The Mill Hill School Foundation.

Ever since his early days as a regular player and ultimately Captain of OMRFC 1st XV, he played a prominent role in all Old Millhillian affairs. He was a Club Committee member for several years, becoming President for 2008-09 and Chair during Andy Mortimer’s Presidential Year 2012-13. He was a key member of the working party that pioneered with the Foundation the introduction of life membership of the Club for all school leavers. He became a Life Guardian in 1997 and then an influential member of the Life Guardians Committee. Beyond the School, he was a Trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust whose Project Director was OM Tony Fitzjohn who also died earlier this year.

Alan was a truly decent person. A gentleman in every sense of the word. We will miss him.

This brief notification of a very sad occasion cannot do justice to Alan’s achievements during his lifetime.

Our thoughts are with Sarah, his wife, and their children Bonnie, Kate, Luke and Sam.

Peter Wakeham

Chair, Old Millhillians Club
