Ian Maciver (Winterstoke1972-79)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ian "Maci" Maciver on the 16th of November, 2024, from a suspected heart attack. Maci was a cherished friend, whose warmth, humour, and natural talent left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was a devoted husband to Sarah, a fantastic role model to his sons Jack and Max, and an adoring grandfather to William.

I had the privilege of knowing Maci for over 50 years, ever since our paths first crossed at Mill Hill. From the very beginning, his exceptional athleticism and passion for sports were evident. Maci was a natural sportsman, always a first-team player, representing the school with distinction in cricket, rugby, squash, hockey, and fives.

Our first encounter was on the cricket pitch, playing for the Yearlings first team. I was the wicketkeeper, and Maci, with his trademark slow left-arm bowling, was already showing his skill. One memorable moment, though somewhat painful, encapsulates his mischievous yet competitive spirit. Standing close to the stumps as usual, I was taken by surprise when, instead of a gentle spinner, Maci delivered a lightning-fast ball that left me sprawled on the ground. As I looked up, dazed, his only response was a cheeky grin and a reminder to "stay alert."

Beyond cricket, we shared the rugby field, where Maci shone as a brilliant fly-half. His leadership and vision steered our team through some challenging seasons, creating moments of triumph that we celebrated together. After school, we continued playing rugby for OMRFC and embarked on unforgettable tours to places like Vichy and Torquay, strengthening our bond and forging memories I will forever cherish.
Cricket remained his greatest passion, a game he excelled at throughout his life. Even after retiring from the sport, he found a new challenge in golf, joining Ashridge Golf Club and the OMGC. With his natural talent and dedication, there was little doubt he would have reached the level of a scratch golfer in no time.

Maci was more than an athlete; he was a truly remarkable person. He was kind-hearted, generous with his time, and always there for his friends and family. He had a way of making everyone feel valued, and his infectious good spirit left a lasting impression on all who met him.

Maci’s loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy of kindness, camaraderie, and excellence will endure in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but the memories of his vibrant personality and steadfast friendship will remain a source of comfort to all who knew him.

Rest in peace, dear Maci. You were one of a kind.
