Andy Mortimer (Burton Bank 1956 - 1961)
1956-61 Burton Bank; Economics VI; Monitor; Junior Tennis, 1958; Singlehanded 1960; 3rd XI cricket; Interim
Dear Old Millhillian,
I know today that everyone’s uppermost thoughts are with Amy, Sophie, Max and Rosie and their respective families.
Andy Mortimer was a giant of a man – physically and spiritually. He was my hero when I was in my first year at Burton Bank and he was a Monitor. He remained my hero for the rest of his valuable life as well as becoming a very close friend. His Valete on leaving Mill Hill is modest to say the least. In fact he himself commented that it did not do justice! I have no idea who wrote them (possibly auto-biographical modesty) but to miss out his rugby involvement is a bizarre omission.
What Andy did after school speaks volumes: a talented businessman, a formidable Number 8 for OMRFC and Wasps RFC, Middlesex RFU Committee member, long-serving Chair of OMRFC, a devoted Trustee and of course a former President and my predecessor as Chair of the Old Millhillians Club.
Andy’s commitment to the Old Millhillian community is legendary. Let none of us be in doubt that his involvement over many decades with the Club and OMRFC has contributed massively to what we enjoy today.
“It’s somehow appropriate that Andy should have seen a talented OMs rugby team win their league for the first time ever, for without his ongoing support and presence over decades we would probably not exist……thank you Andy! Your presence on the touchline will be sadly missed.” Nigel Wray
“Andy not only made OMRFC what it is today, for decades he was also a great contributor to the success of Middlesex RFU. He was President 2005-2008 following several years on the Committee, including roles as Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Chairman of the Selectors Committee and organiser of the Middlesex Sevens until its final event in 2011” Jim Kent
If Tony Fitzjohn were alive today, I am sure he would echo Bob Marshall-Andrews’ perspective:
“In 1989 Andy became a founder trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust created to support the work of Tony Fitzjohn in Tanzania and the Project to save the vast Mkomazi Reserve. He was joined by other notable OM rugby players including Alan Toulson and Peter Wakeham. In the next 34 years Mkomazi became one of the most successful and respected conservation projects in Africa. Andy was the most active and valuable of the trustees. He was our tireless treasurer and a constant source of wisdom, support and advice. Tony’s unique success could never have been achieved without him. His loss is incalculable.” Bob Marshall-Andrews
