Christopher Roger Spong (Winterstoke 1951-1956)
Dear Old Millhillian,
We are sad to inform you that Christopher R Spong passed away peacefully on January 5th 2021.
Christopher was the 1st XV Rugby Captain at the school and Winterstoke Head of House in 1956. He was the son of OM and Rugby International Roger Spong and after leaving school he joined the company run by his father. In 1960 Spong and Co became a Public Company and in 1962 had moved to Basildon, Essex.
Christopher saw the company through a number of changes including the 1980 sell-off of the hardware section of the company to Salter Housewares Ltd, and the change of name of Spong Holdings plc, to Lion Heart plc and then to Brit Nit which itself was eventually sold to Cafetiere Household Articles.
Both Christopher's sons, Nicholas and Simon Spong attended Mill Hill School and excelled at sport, especially rugby.
Much loved husband to Caroline. Loving father to Nicholas, Simon and the late Philippa. Grandfather to Monty, Jonah and Olivia.
Our thoughts are with his family.
Kind Regards,
Old Millhillians Club
