Dear Old Millhillian,
Obesity and its many consequences are among the biggest challenges to individual and national healthcare worldwide in the 21st century and nowhere more so than in the United Kingdom where approximately two thirds of the English population age 16 and over are overweight or clinically obese. Of even greater concern is that 23% of children age 4-5 and 38% of children age 10-11 in England are overweight or obese.
To speak on these serious problems and their possible solutions is Professor Nick Finer, a former professor of clinical academic endocrinologist at University Hospital, London and an Old Millhillian (Murray 1963 -66).
From 2016-2022, Nick was Senior Principal Scientist, Global Medical Affairs, to Novo Nordisk in Denmark, developers and manufacturers of Ozempic and Wegovy, the brand names for semaglutide, the injection therapy for type 2 diabetes and obesity respectively. He will outline the genetic and lifestyle causes of obesity, the causative roles of the food industry and advertising and, importantly, the benefits and risks of semaglutide therapy.
