Speaker: Professor Anthony Mundy PhD (Hon), FRCP, FRCS, FRACS (Hon), FACS (Hon)
We are fortunate to have as this year’s speaker Professor Tony Mundy, Old Millhillian (Winterstoke 1961-65) and distinguished urologist with expertise in many aspects of this specialty. We are again at The Athenaeum and will enjoy a hot buffet supper with wine after the talk.
Tony graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1971 and pursued a career in surgery, eventually settling on the specialty of urology, initially focussing on the surgery for the treatment of bladder dysfunction in children and adolescents. He became senior registrar in urology at Guy’s Hospital in 1978 and, in 1981, consultant and senior lecturer in urological surgery at Guy’s and Lewisham Hospitals. His academic and research work continued to prosper leading to his appointment as Senior Lecturer to the Institute of Urology in 1986. Promotion to professor followed with a personal chair at Guys’ before moving in 1993 to the newly established chair in Urology at UCL School of Medicine and The Institute of Urology, then becoming Director of The Institute of Urology and Nephrology in 1996. Subsequently Tony founded The Urological Research Society and The Society of Academic Urologists.
He has been very busy over many years as a guest lecturer in the UK and overseas and has been awarded honorary fellowships of the Colleges of Surgeons in the US and Australia. Tony is still clinically active in NHS and private practice and is an active member of the Reconstructive Urology Unit at University College London Hospital.
I have asked Professor Mundy to focus his talk on the cancers that affect the lower urinary tract, in particular prostate cancer, which ‘enjoys’ a high profile at present thanks to well known public figures living with the disease as well as the debate that prevails over prostate cancer screening, recently denied to the vast majority of the male population. Tony has particular expertise in reconstructive urology, correcting problems arising from trauma and the surgical treatment of prostate cancer. No doubt he will hold strong views on place of surgical treatment for prostate cancer and hopefully will touch on the alternatives.
This presentation will be relevant and instructive to both medics and the non-medics, so please book your place for an evening of erudition while also enjoying the comfort and hospitality of The Athenaeum.
